What Can a Small Group of Determined People Accomplish???

Anything!

A small group of parents and family members managed to get the attention of SCSD district administrators in a big way this morning. They staged a protest at Lincoln, making bullying the center of their pulpit. Frustrated by a lack of response from building administrators, specifically when confronted with bullying issues, they took to the streets showing up today with signs shouting "Stop the Bullying" and "Stop the Violence.

Great job!

These parents have vowed to show up every morning and afternoon to show their support for the kids who have been forgotten in the Code of Conduct debate - the victims. So, every morning at 7:00 they will be there with their signs supporting the students as they arrive at school. And again, every afternoon at 2:10 they will be there.

And now they need our help!

Come to Lincoln to show YOUR support for safe schools. We can never forget - there is power in numbers! The more who show up, the more attention will be shone on the issue of violence in the Syracuse City School District - and the community as a whole.

And stay tuned for future protests at a
school (or board meeting) near you!

  1. Up to know, it's been all talk. From every direction. Words, even when civil, logical and reasonable, are NEVER enough.

Until ACTION occurs, change CANNOT happen.

It's mind-boggling, the power of the individuals when they connect with other individuals with a common mission. Can we imagine how much change would happen if hundreds -- or more -- of PARENTS banded together with THIS mission in common.

PARENTS typically do not realize THE IMMENSE POWER THEY WIELD in a school district.
Parents of that 95% of kids, whose education is diminished due to the 5% of the blatant, out of control disrupters -- it's TIME to act. YOU are the KEY TO MAKING CHANGE HAPPEN.

  4. I find it "heartening" that community support was overflowing on the streets of Syracuse in support of the children in Texas spending some time in Syracuse while waiting for deportation.
I find it disheartening of the lack of people involved in the Lincoln protests! Why is our community determined, as a whole, to overlook the struggles of our children within the walls of the SCSD? Why is it so easy to turn our back on them? Why is the first solution to resolve a bullying issue to move the victim to a different school?

  5. It is not just Lincoln! We should do a Round Robin starting with Lincoln and move on to other schools too! Go, Lincoln Families!

  6. Moving the victim to another school sends the bully the message that he/she was victorious. The bully will grow up having learned that to solve conflicts just beat someone up. All that will get them is a jail sentence.
It is the behavior of some children in the District that sets them on a path to prison. It is the lack of firm consequences from the school/community/parents that tells these children prison is o.k.

The Code of Conduct was developed to coddle the 5%. The Code of Conduct was developed to discount 95% of the children of the District.

  7. On Monday, November 24 at approximately 1:11 p.m. there was a police response to Nottingham High School for a Suspicious incident.

It was determined that a student had a handgun in their backpack. A robocall was sent to Nottingham parents advising them of this incident and that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken. The call went on to state that the student was possibly fearful of getting to and from school.

  10. A message from Principal David Maynard, along with a link to the article on syracuse.com regarding this incident was forwarded via the Nottingham email list this morning. From what I am hearing, school officials, security, and especially the school resource officer did exactly what they were supposed to do in apprehending the student without incident. However, how did this kid enter our school with a loaded 9mm handgun? Why was he AT Nottingham after the knife incident at Corcoran? And most importantly, what will be the district's consequences?

NO ONE should feel so threatened or desperate that they would steal a gun and bring it to school. BUT - no one, NO ONE, should ever send their child to school and fear that their child will not come home. YES, this is a bigger issue, a community issue, a social issue. In the meantime, RIGHT NOW, I want to be sure that NO CHILD in a SCSD school is shot or stabbed. Deal with the immediate danger NOW.

  11. I find it hard to continue to keep my children in the SCSD especially in light of the current Student Involved Worker Comps claims. Approx 75 new cases in September and approx 95 new cases in October.
How can anyone not see, not BELIEVE that something is terribly off-track in the District? How in the world do we stand by and say that it is ok for ANY child to treat ANYONE with such uncivil behavior? How in the world do we continue to make excuses for a child to treat people with such disregard?
At last weeks Board meeting, Mr. Dixie stood up and said it was time to stop pointing fingers and come together. I like that. I don't believe his message though as just four days prior he was pointing fingers at the NAN meeting. Mr. Dixie is very good at taking the words of one person and saying that ALL participants of a group believe/feel the same. Contreras was at the same meeting also telling a story to demonstrate how racist teachers/people are.
At some point, the hurts, the misunderstandings, the emotional scars, need to be cast aside for the sake of the future of all children in the District.
The continued attitude of hate and distrust will only serve as a self fulfilling prophecy for the very kids that we are all trying to save. Meaning our kids will not learn how to behave in the world in which they live. Schools are a microcosm of society. It is a place to learn academics and social skills, societal skills. Failure to learn these skills in school could/will result in the behavior being demonstrated out in society, at their job. Then what happens...
