Creation of a Fairy Tale, Part Two

One can only hope that our nation's leaders are not nearly as blind to the truth as our district appears to be. Today, Superintendent Sharon Contreras was one of several panelists at a briefing for members of Congress and their staff. Also on the panel were:
  • Dan Losen, Director of the Center for Civil Rights Remedies
  • Marcia Weissman, Director of the Center for Community Alternatives
  • Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers
  • Representative Bobby Scott from Virginia, top ranking Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee
At this briefing, the Superintendent was quoted as saying "This has been difficult work, but we certainly have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of suspensions in the Syracuse City School District."

As if this is the measure of success???

When asked for hard numbers to back up the assessment, they were not "readily available." Did no one anticipate that this question would be asked and ensure that Superintendent Contreras was armed with the necessary data? Or could they not arm her with data because the statement is NOT TRUE?

Just because the district is not suspending students out of school DOES NOT mean that things are better. It may just mean that, as hundreds of teachers allege, our district is...

Sweeping behavioral issues under the carpet!!!

Our friends at Be the Change recently polled their members to get their perception - as people who are in the schools on a regular basis - on how the disciplinary crisis is playing out. 78% of the nearly 500 respondents are current district employees and another 10% are parents. All people who have a pretty good idea of what is going in our schools RIGHT NOW, because they are there every day.

Their assessment is devastating, to say the least, and in direct contrast to the fairy tale our district leadership attempts to paint. Take a look...

What do YOU think?

  1. While the superintendent flagrantly paints a completely fictitious picture to Congress, nearly 500 current teachers and staffers in the SCSD tell quite a DIFFERENT story. Her allegations are a total misrepresentation of the ever-increasing levels of violence and chaos in the SCSD schools, from K to 12.
Those working INSIDE the schools are shaking their collective heads, asking, "WHAT the ___?!?" in reaction to Contreras' bold-faced LIES about the positive results of the Code of Conduct.
For a report on the ACTUAL, highly DISTURBING, dangerous state of affairs inside the schools, and how the Code of Conduct is NOT helping, along with how the administration both at building level AND in Central Offices is altering the actual referrals sent in by teachers, see link to the "Be the Change" Safe Schools Report, above, at the end of the article . NOT to be missed! PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE REPORT . . . and SHARE!
This report needs to be shared with every stakeholder in the district, from City Hall, to ALL of the TV news stations, to the Attorney General and the Governor. Every single parent and taxpayer, along with city, county and national elected officials needs to read every single detail of this report, to discover the REAL story, vs. the smoke and mirrors perpetuated by this ruthless, less than transparent Central Offices Administration. Said simply: The Gig Is Up, Ms. Contreras. You cannot pull the wool over their faces any longer. THE TRUTH IS OUT.

  2. Not reporting discipline issues does lower suspensions while creating a powder keg situation inside the schools. Fortunately she created the Latin school so her child does not have to try and receive an education in such deplorable conditions.

  3. I believe that the Mayor is behind the Post Standard not reporting consistently and accurately on the conditions in the school. It has become difficult for realtors to sell houses in Syracuse to families with school age children. "I'm not sending my kids to those schools."

  4. One of my students whom everyone has tried everything with tackled me to the ground last week. I was blocking his was back into the room due to the breakable display a guest speaker brought. He put himself in a football tackle stance and rammed me. I ended up on the floor on my side with my hand breaking my fall. Had various opinions on what I should do had people saying keep you mouth shut and others pushing forms and papers at me, Honestly I don't even remember what happened the 10 minutes after the incident. I just know that he was given 5 days suspension and that was overruled to 2. This is a kid who has already been in the step program andI don;t believe he has been able to actually sit through an entire block without being removed or leaving since september, When the incident was over one of my outspoken student expressed his frustration by saying "How exactly is he even in the 5th grade he did nothing last year and was sent to a special school, when he came back he did the same things and now we have to suffer another year."

  5. I know a teacher that recently was tackled from a football stance to the ground so the student could get back in the room. He had a meltdown after losing a game and started throwing chairs. There was a glass display in the room at the time and the teacher was afraid of what might happen if let back in so she blocked the door. He was given 5 days with hearing by principal, district decided it was only worthy of 2 no hearing.

  6. How many people is Contreras going to hire who have been asked to leave another place or who have clearly not been wanted in their previous districts? We voted no confidence in her, she doesn't settle contracts despite how many out-of-towners she hires in "talent management," and she hires other district castaways at extremely high salaries. I wonder which sorority Dr. Atkinson is a member of, since that seems to be a minimum qualification for consideration from Contreras?

  7. Everything must be good now. I don't see any updates on this page concerning any other schools. But I'm concerned about what happened at my son's school a couple months ago. Got a call from the principal saying one of the kids had to be remove by the police.
