Sharon Contreras Clarifies Her Remarks in a Letter to Vera House

Just posted on syracuse.com is Superintendent Contreras' clarification of her remarks about the sexual assault that took place at H.W. Smith K-8. There is no apology, no talk of steps that are being put into place to provide a higher level of protection to our kids, no explanation of why she has said nothing for a week.

What are your thoughts on this? Did her letter go far enough?

  1. No, this letter did not go far enough. I thought it was full of a lot of I's. WHy isn't she addressing the general public, the parents, staff and students of the district? Once again, she has proven that she cares about her self image.

  2. She said nothing. It reminded me of Arne Duncan's non-apology over his remarks. She praised herself, and never acknowledged that she was an insensitive clod. She still has said nothing about taking responsibility for the mess this district is in. I am disgusted by all of her actions throughout this whole disastrous situation. Does she have any human feelings at all? I tend to think not.

  3. Sharon Contreras is only concerned with her image. I believe that there was a knife involved in the incident. One of the boys involved in the incident returned to school the following day with a knife. Ms. Contreras had to be fully aware of this when she responded to the public regarding the incident.

    Dear SCSD Team,

The first three months of this school year have flown by and the first snow of the year has fallen. I’ve enjoyed visiting your classrooms, participating in school activities, attending SCSD Fall sports events and theatrical productions at each of our high schools, and cheering our students on during exciting academic competitions here in Syracuse and throughout the region. With the Holiday season approaching and Thanksgiving in a couple of days, it is important that we take pause and reflect on those things for which we are grateful.

As I reflect during this season of thanksgiving, I am so very thankful to serve with each of you. Together we are serving the children and the families of Syracuse and impacting 21,000 young lives every single day. We are serving during perhaps the most tumultuous era in public education. The year has been challenging for us, but we continue to work to turn challenges into successes –professional successes, personal successes and successes for the beautiful and gifted children who look to us each day for guidance, knowledge, and support. I want you to know that I appreciate your work and thank you for always focusing on a brighter future for our students and the Syracuse City School District. Your hard work can often feel like it goes unnoticed, but nothing is further from the truth.

Please take time over the Thanksgiving holiday to relax with and enjoy your families and friends. I am hopeful this Thanksgiving that the good things in life are yours in abundance.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Warm regards,
    Sharon

    Pecan Pie

    3 large eggs
    ¾ - 1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup of Karo light corn syrup
    2 tablespoons butter, softened
    1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large tablespoon all purpose flour
1 ½ cups of pecans, chopped
    1 (9-inch) frozen deep-dish pie crust

    Instructions:

    PREHEAT oven to 350 degrees.

WHISK the eggs. Then whisk in the sugar.

MIX in corn syrup, butter and vanilla using a spoon. Add the flour and then stir in the pecans. Pour filling into pie crust.

BAKE on center rack of oven for 60 to 70 minutes. Cool for 2 hours on wire rack before serving.

*To use prepared frozen pie crust: Place cookie sheet in oven and preheat oven as directed. Pour filling into frozen crust and bake on preheated cookie sheet. Use a pie shield or aluminum foil to prevent the edges of the pie shell from overbrowning.

  5. Both students and staff members are being verbally and physically assaulted on a daily basis throughout the SCSD. Neither group feels comfortable to share what's happening because their fear of retaliation is greater than the actual assault itself. Where is Mayor Miner? Where is Chief Fowler? Where are the community activists? Where are religious leaders? Someone, anyone, needs to step in and help NOW. Students and staff members need a positive, proactive change which shows every human being respect, dignity and compassion, nt to mention safety and security.
