Yet Another Weapon Incident

It is with profound relief that we can report that the second weapon incident in the SCSD in less than a week (that we know of!) did not result in any injuries. As many of you may already know, today a second-grader at McKinley-Brighton brought a .22 caliber handgun to school and was showing it off at lunchtime to a friend when a staff member spotted it. We have avoided tragedy twice... Can we avoid it a third time?

Every single SCSD parent, staff member, and stakeholder should be demanding a statement from the Superintendent and the Board of Education, outlining how they will handle this escalating crisis!

There is an immediate need for our leaders to stand up and make it known to students and parents that WE WILL NOT TOLERATE weapons in our buildings! Where the heck are they? Why are they not on the news? Why are they not in our schools? Why are we getting robo-calls about the Latin school, but not a single district-wide robo-call advising parents and students that schools do not tolerate weapons on campus and providing guidance to students on what to do if they see a weapon in school?

While their silence is not surprising, it is disappointing - again.

SCSD LEADERS TAKE NOTE. NOW IS THE TIME TO TAKE A STAND BEFORE A TRAGEDY OCCURS!

  1. Is this just another "incident of a "perceived" problem? Maybe , this child 's teacher has to improve his/her discipline procedures or make the boring common core lessons more interesting!

  2. It is time for all people (teachers, ta's, lunch attendants, PRINCIPALS) to stand up and speak out about all incidents of violence in the schools. It is time to have the courage to PROTECT the children, to protect each other! What will it take for people to stand united and speak the truth? I read comments on blog and Syracuse.com by people who constantly warn us that these incidents are just the tip of a big, ugly iceberg! Why are these people not contacting the press, why are they not speaking up at BOE meetings? There is safety in numbers when you speak against the wrong that is being allowed to continue in the SCSD. Why are teachers and principals not forming a wall of protection around the children? Speak out NOW! Speak out today! Call the press EVERY time police are dispatched to a school. Everytime there is a fight. Everytime a child gets bullied. You do not have to give your name. Give date and time and location and what happened! PROTECT THE CHILDREN WITH THE TRUTH!

  8. It was reported to the media who I guess chose not to pursue it in light of the incident at Grant. Or they did pursue and were lied too.

  9. This is bigger than SCSD. Although I do not appreciate nor do I agree with the response from administration in the district, I believe there is a much larger issue at hand. The violence in our community is contagious. We need leaders from the community (parents, religious leaders, business owners) to come together as one voice with the district. I am not one to push values and morals on others, but where are we going here? It is sad to see our youngest children with little hope for the future based on what they are experiencing both at home and in their school, aka "safe place".
