Things Are Heating Up

Sadly, we have heard about a couple of frightening incidents already this week that give us pause, one involving a child slashing bus seats (in Zorro-like fashion) with a knife hidden in a backpack and one that left a child hospitalized after being beaten by a peer.

Both situations could have easily turned tragic. And while we have been blessed to not have an incident of epic proportions, we do not want to tempt fate...

Going to school should not mean taking your life in your own hands...

  1. Where did the school fight take place? What school was the bus bus incident incident? There are cameras on the bus. Many bus situations across the county are sent to CNN. That may be the route to go since the public can't learn anything from the local media! I think SCSD take back our schools should go on the Today Show, Good morning America or 60 minutes!

  2. I disagree - I believe a child being beaten by a peer bad enough to go to the hospital is TRAGIC and needs to be treated as such. I would not want my child attending a school where that has occurred or where there is the possibility of something like that occurring.

  3. The boy that got beat up had been bullying the student who beat him up. Taunting the boy and the boys girlfriend. Ultimately he struck the girl and her boyfriend had enough. Went too far. Dropped him on his head causing an injury.

  4. Always two sides to every story. Sometimes I wonder how much the schools CAN be aware of and prevent. I'm not saying NONE of the problems can be prevented ...

    1. Strange comment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you on our side or not????????/ i think 90-95% of the problems can be prevented. There are many presituations that are not handled or controlled to by administrators that lead up to the big ones!

  6. Heard a good one today that administrators have been told not to call 911 from their buildings. Not sure what that means but it doesn't sound good. Also my daughter was bullied so bad at one of our high schools I pulled her out. Administrators slapped their hands and then did nothing. They even gave the girls Most Valuable Player awards.

  7. There are many comments, some from police officers, some from administrators and students, about the hearing process in the SCSD. Apparently they are almost always turned over by the Superintendent, even those that are for violent, repeat offenders. In one case, a hearing lasted over 4 hours while the group decided the best course of action, and when presented to SC, she immediately sent the kid back to school.

  8. I have been told that the hearings are now conducted by an outside agency contracted by the SCSD. The agency provides legal-esg representation to the parent(s) and student at the hearing to ensure students' civil rights are not violated.. Hearings now take several hours to conclude as a result. Although no single parent has filed a civil suit against the hearing office for past practices that anyone is aware of, and even though the previous hearing officers employed by the district were both excellent, the district is spending money that would be better spent of hiring back some of the teachers and TAs that have been laid off to ward off a wolf that does not exist.

  10. I have heard of many more violent incidents that are either not being reported or are being ignored. VP at Porter injured, nurse at an elementary school injured, assaults on teachers where students are returned to classroom with no ISS time, etc. Is this being overlooked or not reported?

  11. I don't understand why people are not reporting events anonymously! Does anyone have an answer to this question?

  12. Nothing gets reported anymore because it all gets overlooked.

  14. The only way to access the page is to be added by another group member.

  15. Why has activity stopped on this blog? It seems as though things in the SCSD are getting worse, nothing is changing and the noise is becoming less and less. WHY???

    1. I was wondering the same thing! Our building is out of control. There is NO administrative support! Teachers are blamed for everything!

    2. PTSD. When you experience it every single day it begins to invade all facets of your life. It changes the way you think, feel, react, and relate to others. It becomes important to not take it home so your loved ones do not suffer. Not talking or blogging about it after work allows for some sense of peace and normalcy for a few hours.

    1. Correct. In addition, a pellet gun dumped on Tuesday on school grounds when students found out about a security check. Knife found on playground Thursday. Some students were suspended for smoking pot in school.

  19. I am looking for help on this site. I am being totally bullied and targeted by my administrator who claims it is my classroom management. I have four students who have serious mental health issues. She keeps writing me memos. These children can be dangerous! I am an elementary teacher. What steps should I take to prove that I'm being targeted. I also need to prove that this administrator is making her own building unsafe by her ignore and blame method! PS- I have a lot of documentation!

    1. I would suggest you go to your building rep and report it to STA.

    2. Naturally, I tried that route but the administrator scares the building reps as well. I was thinking about calling Paul Riede because I have parent backing!

    3. You are not alone with this situation - others are just too overwhelmed and/or burnt out/intimidated to fight it. You need much more support than you are getting here. Your idea about going to Paul Reide (at the Syracuse Newspapers) is an excellent one, although he has yet to publish much of anything that directly challenges or exposes the SCSD. He does, though, have the POWER of the pen to do so, if you could make a compelling enough case to at least spark his interest in finding out more (and in hearing from a lot more in your situation). Have with you written statements and /or parents who are ready and willing to talk with Reide -- this could be your foot in the door, as he has demonstrated interest in several parents' alternative views, even doing feature stories on some in the past year. There definitely is power in numbers, and this applies to convincing this education writer to investigate what the SCSD and the STA will not. This is near-scandalous, if not outright illegal, per NYS Education Law and your SCSD contract. Perhaps you should also consult with NYSUT, if you cannot get action from the STA. Don't stop pressing your union for support, here. You can document 'til the cows come home, but until they (your union) take some kind of action on it, it is for naught. Make an appointment to sit with either Kevin or Mike ASAP, and don't take no for an answer. Your dues pay their salaries.

    4. Hire your own attorney and get some legal advice to see what your options are. And yes, keeping pressing STA.
